Bus Comandments

Anyone who has ever ridden any form public transportation has seen these three signs.
They are pretty self-explanatory, but I seem to find myself always having to remind passengers that they are rules, not suggestions.

Thou Shall Not Litter

Unfortunately garbage seems to be inherent of some busy bus stops.  This doesn’t have to be that way though.  If use transit and you know that the stop you use either doesn’t have a garbage can or its always full, keep a plastic grocery bag with you just in case you eat a snack, drink a soda, or just feel like cleaning up garbage you may come across.  Once you arrive somewhere with a garbage can throw away your bag.  Doing this small thing can help keep your bus stop and your bus free of litter.  I had a passenger on my bus one day with an “extendagrabber” and at the end of the line each way, he went through the bus and cleaned up any and all garbage he found.  I thought this was amazing.  Now if everyone would clean up after themselves this man wouldn’t need to clean up anything.  Not to mention most transit agencies are running on skeleton maintenance crews to deal with slashed budgets, so every little bit that you can do helps immensely.

Thou Shall Not Smoke
While this one seems pretty obvious there are still people who don’t seem to understand it. This rule simply means don’t smoke on the bus, it doesn’t matter if the window is open and you are in the very back row.  If you need your nicotine fix that bad, then get off the bus.
Now one little part about this rule that seems to escape most smokers is that you need to blow ALL of the smoke out of your lungs BEFORE you even step foot onto the bus.  There isn’t much that can ruin anyone’s day faster than having your stale cigarette smoke blown in their face (trust me I speak from experience).

Thou Shall Not Eat
The bus is not a cafeteria or your living room. When you eat you leave behind little crumbs or a big mess, either way it attracts bugs and it makes the bus look trashy. If you can’t wait to bite into the juicy artery clogging burger you just bought, then eat it at the bus stop and catch the next bus or wait until you get to your destination.

Thou Shall Not Listen to Loud Music

When you board a bus and you have your music blaring it can be very offensive to some and others just want to have a quite ride home.  Listening to a PERSONAL music player is acceptable as long as the volume stays at a PERSONAL level not a public level.  If you just can’t wait to get off the bus to listen to the new tracks you just downloaded then you are more than welcome to walk and listen to it as loud as your ears can possibly stand.

Now there is one sign that is not displayed and I cannot for the life of me figure it out since it is one of the most abused rules.

Thou Shall Not Use Profane Language While Riding

When you are riding you don’t want to hear someone talking about how “successful” their night was at the club or listen to a lover’s quarrel as it erupts into a verbal assault on one another.  While you may be used to using that kind of language when its just you and your friends, it is not welcomed or tolerated on-board.  A rule of thumb, if you can’t figure out what I’m referring to is if you wouldn’t say to your mother then don’t say it in front of strangers.  If you can’t figure this one out, you’ll soon be using your two feet to get where you are going.

As I’m sure you’ve seen there is an on going theme with all of these rules.  If you choose not to obey them on public transit you’ll be walking where you are going.  At most you would only have to live by them for about an hour and a half.  If your driver kindly asks you to respect these rules, its in your best interest to do just that.

  1. Perhaps I’m just lucky, but I’ve never seen anyone try to light up a cigarette (or anything else for that matter) inside the bus. Everything else though… Couldn’t agree with you more.

One rule I long for transit agencies to have is “No Nail Clipping/Filing.” I can’t stand when I’m stuck next to someone doing that and I end up as a human bullseye.

    • I can’t stand that either and whenever I see or hear it on my bus, you better believe I put a stop to it. Its disgusting and disrespectful to other passengers.

As far as the smokes are concerned, on some of or older buses the windows slide open and occasionally I’ll have someone try to get away with it, until I look in my mirror and see some smoke coming out of my bus.
